A dispatch from the Governor-General to Sir J. Keane

Copy of a dispatch from the Governor-General to Sir J. Kane, K.C.B., G.C.H appointing the latter to the command of the army in place of Sir Henry Fane, and issuing instructions for the support of the efforts of Shah Shujah Ool Moolk to re-establish his sovereignty in Afghanistan in opposition to Dost Mahomed Khan and the Chief's of Kandahar: also a copy of a despatch to W.H. Macnaughton, Envoy and Minister at the Court of Shah Shuja, containing instructions regarding policy and actions to be adopted in supporting Shah Shujah on his return to Afghanistan.

Printed textual material related to political reform in Canada in the 1830s. Includes words and music for patriotic songs, newspaper clippings of historical and politic writings, political resolutions and petitions, a certificate of thanks from the City of Toronto, and a map and drawing of the Niagara River region.

Journal of Thomas Storrow Brown

File consists of Brown's journal kept at sea aboard the Mary Frances, 1838. The notebook is a printed composition book (printed by M. Day, North York) with the printed title, "Writing Book." and an engraving of falconry and a verse beginning with the first line, "Strive to be either agreeable or useful; thus only is it that the world can be gained."

Correspondence, 1835-1838

Political, business, and personal correspondence. The letters are mostly addressed to Henry S. Chapman (nine letters), with others addressed to Thomas Falconer (five letters), Samuel Revans (four letters), Chapman and Falconer (one letter) and D. Daly, possibly Sir Dominick Daly (one letter). The creators of the letters include Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan (seven letters), François Antoine LaRocque (5 letters), Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine (four letters), Jacob DeWitt (one letter), and Claude Perrault (one letter). The earlier letters chiefly concern business interests, including the establishment of a Canadian Company house in London, as well as the partnership between LaRoque and Revans. The letters from 1837 and 1838 have a much more informal tone, and focus on political reform and the events during and following the Upper and Lower Canada Rebellions of 1837-1838.

Diverse papers (6), including: two letters to Joseph Hubert Lacrois (d.1818) (one also adressed to Louis-Hugues Hertel de Chambly) from Dr. Simon Fraser; notes to accompany a map (missing) of part of Haute Ville Quebec; and a copy of a letter from Janiver Domptail Lacroix to Gosford, accepting an appointment.

Letter from Lord Gosford to Hertel de Rouville

Autograph signed letter from Lord Gosford, dated Castle St. Lewis, 16 April 1837, regarding a position vacancy, possibly among the commissioners for rebellion losses. Gosford regrets that it is not in his power to meet Hertel de Rouville's wishes.

North West Manuscripts, Journal, and Letters

Series consists chiefly of 38 manuscripts related to the North West Company. Among the Masson manuscripts there are other series of letters; as well as journals kept by North-Westers and various business documents. Some of this material exists as originals; others are contemporary copies - the George Keith letters for example are contemporary copies on paper watermarked 1827. The collection also includes some duplicate texts - contemporary copies or later nineteenth-century copies that in some cases represent edited versions of the texts. Samuel Wilcocke's account of the death of Benjamin Frobisher exists in a draft original (or contemporary copy) and in a late nineteenth-century clean copy. Of course Benjamin Frobisher did not die in the dramatic circumstances as recorded by Wilcocke, but peacefully in Quebec City in 1821.

Autograph letter from John Gibson, 2 September 1837

File consists of an autograph letter from John Gibson to Abraham, addressed to him at the 'Journal Office | Castle Street | Liverpool’, containing news that ‘Captain Thompson of the Countess of Lonsdale’ will be delivering ‘a present from a few of your friends in Whitehaven’. The letter also includes, pencilled crosswise, a draft of Abraham's reply.
