A. & W. MacKinlay was a bookselling company founded by Andrew and William MacKinlay (Scottish-born businessmen and philanthropists) in 1827, and based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The company expanded and described itself as "Publishers, Booksellers, Stationers, and Blank Book Manufacturers". Over the course of the company's existence, A. & W. MacKinlay, Limited sold books, paper products, and writing implements; printed school texts, blank books, religious works, and books pertaining to agriculture, botany, and politics; published locally written books; and produced educational maps. In 1862, MacKinlay, Limited produced a map of Nova Scotia which was considered, at the time, the finest example of its kind. The company was in existence until at least 1929. Andrew MacKinlay was also a dedicated promoter of education, community development, and "the welfare of the young and handicapped," serving on the boards of multiple charitable organizations.

A. (Alexander) Williams & Co. was a publishing and bookselling company in Boston, Massachusetts. They acted as special agents for Harper & Brothers Publications.

Elfriede Martha Abbe was an American sculptor, wood engraver and botanical illustrator, often displaying nature and simple country living inspired by her Upstate New York home. A self-publisher, Abbe created numerous hand-printed books, which she printed on a printing press in her studio.

Dr. Samuel Leonard Abbot was born on May 3, 1818, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

In 1838, he graduated from Harvard Medical School. For 60 years he was connected with the Massachusetts General Hospital and he also had a large private practice. For many years he was an associate editor of the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal. He was a zealous student of ornithology, officially connected with the Boston Society of Natural History. He was a member of the Thursday Evening Club and one of the administrators of the First Church of Boston.

He married Eliza Jane Hoppin. He died on July 1, 1904, in Boston, Massachusetts.
