Administrative history

Sampson Low & Co. was a bookselling and publishing company in London, England, in the 19th century. It was founded in 1819 by Sampson Low (1797-1886), a bookseller and stationer. In 1848, he was joined by his son Sampson Low Jr. (1822–1871). The company’s name changed a few times when a new partner joined (Sampson Low, Son & Marston, 1856; Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1879). The company's principal line of business was book publishing, but it also published a range of periodicals, e.g., Publisher's Circular, Etcher, and Picture Gallery. As a result of Low acting as the agent for Harper Brothers of New York, the company became the leading publisher of American works.
