The McGill Group in Medical Genetics Oral Histories Collection documents the history of the McGill Group in Medical Genetics, active 1972 to 2009, through fourteen oral histories with the group's members. The Collection contains transcripts in English and in French translation of oral history interviews conducted with the members of the McGill Group in Medical Genetics between 2009 and 2011. The oral history interviews were held in the course of a larger project conducted by a group of researchers at McGill's School of Social Studies of Medicine to document the history of the group and its role in the development of the field of medical genetics in Canada more broadly. These researchers included Christopher Canning, Andrea Tone, George Weisz, and Alberto Cambrosio. The project received guidance from David Rosenblatt and funding from the Canada Research Chair Program in the Social History of Medicine. The fourteen interviews document the members' individual biographies and careers, as well as the history and development of the McGill Group in Medical Genetics during a transformative period in the field of medical genetics. The interviews are available as transcripts, created by Christopher Canning. French translations of the transcripts were also created by McGIll's Translation Services and are also made available. The fonds includes a collection of AIDS activism materials, with an emphasis on its manifestation in Canada's visual art world, through the collections of Mr. John A. Schweitzer and others. Several of the documents have been signed by either John A. Schweitzer or Robert Mapplethorpe. The materials in the collection include posters, press releases, conference programs, exhibition catalogues, exhibition invitations, exhibition ephemera, programs, brochures, tear-sheets, auction catalogues, and reviews.
Fonds documents the development of Dr. Boyd's career in trauma care and emergency medical services systems, beginning at the University of Maryland in Baltimore and Cook County Hospital in Chicago, where he became interested in hemorrhagic shock and other clinical investigations, through his work in establishing national emergency medical services systems and his experience with the Indian Health Service. Also includes publications and clippings honouring Boyd's contributions as the founder of emergency medical services systems. Fonds largely comprised of reprints and copies of articles for scholarly and popular publications. Also contains some manuscripts of unpublished works and one draft of published work.
The collection consists of various documents, photographs, and audio and video recordings generated by the official activities of the Bethune Foundation; also included are documents, publications and photographs related to Dr. Bethune and to China or Chinese medicine, pamphlets, posters, and Bethune Foundation newsletters.
Consists of material relating to the School of Nursing at the Queen Elizabeth hospital, including yearbooks (1960-1964), school notes, photographs of alumni and publications on the history of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and memorabilia. Some documents and photographs relate in particular to the 1963 class of the School of Nursing. One item relates to the Alexandra Hospital for Contagious Diseases and consists of a January 1970 nursing manual with hospital policies regarding hygiene, diet, evening and morning care, some nursing treatments, and patient admittance; also includes descriptions of various contagious illnesses. One file consists of a digital copy of an originally typewritten text entitled "History of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital" produced by the Alumnae Association. This item details the history of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital beginning with its origins as a homeopathic institution and the creation of a nursing school, along with many details as to nurses' schedules, regulations, and uniforms during the early days of the hospital. It also contains a list of nurses "who have done outstanding work in the nursing field" between 1908 and 1939, and a list of nursing school superintendants from 1894 to 1905.
The fonds is divided into series, following the provenance and arrangement of the depositor as much as possible. Among the principal series are: President's binders or files, Secretary's binders or files, CHLA/ABSC special reports, and CHLA/ABSC publications. Within the series are found sub-series, i.e. President's binder, correspondence. The organization of the binders revolves around the Board Meetings, which occur three times a year, in June, October and February. At this time, reports are presented and decisions acted upon. Addenda to the Board Minutes frequently exceed 10 items. The fiscal year is from June 1 to May 31.
