George Dickson taught English and science at Hamilton Collegiate, and served as its principal from 1872 to 1885. In 1877, he hired J.W. Spencer to teach chemistry, physiology, geology, zoology and physics. In 1885, he became Headmaster of Upper Canada College in Toronto. He and his wife founded St. Margaret's College in Toronto, which was a high school to prepare girls for university.
