Biographical history

Alexander Balloch Grosart was born on June 18, 1827, in Stirling, Scotland.

He was a Presbyterian minister, literary editor, publisher, and author. He attended the University of Edinburgh. In 1856, he became a minister of the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland at Kinross, serving the congregation known as First United Presbyterian Church. In 1865, he went to Liverpool, and three years later to Blackburn. Grosart's reputation was as a great Elizabethan and Jacobean scholar. He reprinted rare Elizabethan literature, a work which he undertook because of his interest in Puritan theology. In 1877, he received an honorary degree of LL.D. from the University of Edinburgh and an honorary D.D. degree from the University of St. Andrews. In 1892, he retired and moved to Dublin.

In 1866, he married Elizabeth McDowall (1848–1927). He died on March 16, 1899, in Dublin, Ireland.
