Biographical history
Theodore Dehon Rand was born on September 16, 1836, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He was an American lawyer, mineralogist, and author. He was educated at the Episcopal Academy and the Polytechnic College in Philadelphia. He studied law in the office of the Philadelphia firm of Bullit and Fairthorne. After his admission to the bar, the firm changed to Fairthorne & Rand and later Rand & Patton. In 1871, he became a member of the board of managers of the Franklin Institute. In 1873, he was appointed the Treasurer of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and remained in the position by annual re-elections until 1903. In 1875, he became a member of the council of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences and director of its mineralogical and geological section. A few years before his death, he withdrew from legal practice and made numerous valuable contributions to science, especially in the geology and mineralogy of southeastern Pennsylvania.
In 1864, he married Margaretta Elizabeth Belrose (1834–1886). He died on April 24, 1903, in Radnor, Pennsylvania.
