Louis Auguste Crié was born on August 1, 1850, in Conlie, Sarthe, France.

He was a French botanist, paleontologist, naturalist, and author. He was educated at the Lycée du Mans in 1868. He received the degree of Doctor of Medicine (1877) and Doctor of Science (1878). He became a professor at the Faculté des sciences de Rennes where he was in charge of studies of plant fossils for 31 years. He was interested in the flora of the nineteenth century and botanical geography as well as plant anatomy and physiology. He studied the plant fossils in Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, Polynesia, the Philippines, some Portuguese colonies in Africa, and in other French colonies. He also studied the plant paleontology of Western France. He is the author of numerous publications in all fields of his studies. He was a member of the National Academy of Medicine (France). In 1901, he received the award Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur‎ (Knight of the Legion of Honour).

He died on August 31, 1912, in Rennes, Ille-et-Vilaine, France.
