    Biographical history

Roderick MacGregor was born on May 18, 1802, in Stellarton, Pictou County, Nova Scotia.

He was a merchant. He began a wholesale-retail trade in partnership with his brother James in 1830. They split up in 1843 when James went into the hardware business. Roderick subsequently expanded into provisioning, general merchandising, and shipping through R. McGregor and Sons, in which his two sons, James Drummond and Peter Archibald, were partners. The business grew rapidly, and by the time James Drummond (1838-1918) succeeded his father as senior partner, the family had become one of the two wealthiest in the New Glasgow area.

In 1831, he married Janet Jessie Chisholm (1810-1888). He died on May 29, 1871, in New Glasgow, Pictou County, Nova Scotia.
