Adoniram Judson Eaton was born on October 16, 1850, in Granville Centre, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia.
He was an educator. He attended Acadia University, Wolfville, N.S. (B.A., 1873 and M.A., 1877) and continued his studies at Harvard (B.A., 1876), Yale, and Leipzig (Ph.D., 1885). He became Headmaster of Amherst Academy, Mass. (1877-1879) and later Principal of Woonsocket High School, Providence, R.I. In 1886, he was appointed Associate Professor of Classics at McGill University. He was a member of the American Oriental Society and the American Philological Association. He edited several textbooks for colleges and schools and was a frequent contributor to educational journals.
In 1879, he married Adelia Woodman (1851–1926). He died on August 1, 1929, in Montreal, Quebec.
