William Bleeker Potter was born on March 25, 1846, in Schenectady, Schenectady County, New York.
He was an American consulting mining engineer and metallurgist. He graduated from Columbia University in 1866 and received an honorary degree D.Sc. in 1904. He served as the first Professor of Mining and Metallurgy at Washington University (1871–1893) and Director of the Missouri Geological Survey (1889– 1893). He published an article, "Contributions to the Archæology of Missouri, Part I. Pottery" (1880).
In 1888, he married Agnes Kennett Farrar (1862–1922). He died on July 14, 1914, in St. Louis City, Missouri.
