    Biographical history

William Craig Baynes was born on May 7, 1809, in Quebec City, Quebec.

He was educated in England for the service of the East India Company, but he gave up the appointment and entered Trinity College in Cambridge where he received his degree of B.A. in 1836. In 1843, he returned to Canada and settled in Kingsey Falls to farm the lands inherited by his father. In 1856, he relocated to Montreal after taking a position as secretary at McGill University, a post he held until his death in 1887. He is also credited as the founder of what was eventually Natural History Hall, now Newman Place Christian Assembly in Montreal.

In 1841, he married Morigiana Harvey. He died on October 9, 1887, in Montreal, Quebec.
