Biographical history

Hon. William Dennis was born on March 4, 1856, in Cornwall, England.
He was an editor, journalist, publisher, and politician. Self-educated, he arrived in Canada in 1873, settling in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was a reporter for The Halifax Herald (1875-1881), a news editor from 1883 to 1900, and became its editor in chief and president in 1890. From 1881 to 1883, he was an editor for The Winnipeg Sun and he published The Evening Mail in Halifax in 1894. Dennis also served on the Halifax town council. In 1912, as an Independent Conservative, he was appointed to the Senate of Canada for the Halifax, Nova Scotia division. He remained a Senator until his death in 1920.
In 1878, he married Agnes Miller (1859–1947). He died on July 11, 1920, in Boston Massachusetts.
