Biographical history
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1830, the daughter of a merchant, Margaret A. Y. Mercer married John William Dawson in March of 1847. The couple lived at 293 University Street, Montreal. One of her sons, George Mercer Dawson (1849–1901), became a well known and respected scientist and geologist like his father. She died in September of 1913.

Describes her illness as a grave inflammation of the lungs which resulted from her neglect of a cold. The physician gave her drugs 9 times a day. Se was bled several times and 8 times blistered. Has been under doctors supervision since a but is recovering.
