File contains half leather bound notebook with marbled paper over boards containing notes on geological surveying trips to various locations . Partial alphabetical index of places is given on page [1] and includes Digby, Bras D'Or, Joggins, Caribou Cove and many others. Includes notes in pen, hand drawn diagrams, and hand drawn maps laid in. Majority of entries appear to date from the late 1840s.

File contains half leather bound notebook with marbled paper over boards containing notes and diagrams on geological topics, including Murray Bay (La Malbaie) and Montreal (Hochelaga), sheets of drawings and diagrams laid or tipped in, newspaper clippings (including on 1871 Hawkesbury earthquake, an 1879 Ontario earthquake, and other Quebec earthquakes during the 1880s), and letters to William Dawson and other fragments of notes tipped in. Various dates found throughout.

File contains notebook of lecture notes on natural philosophy kept by John William Dawson during 1836 while at Pictou Academy, Nova Scotia. Topics include descriptions of metals, chemistry, and light (including colour sketch).

File consists of notebook written chiefly at Edinburgh in 1841 by John William Dawson containing notes on zoology. Notes are in pen with some pencil drawings of specimens. Manuscript table of contents at the end lists zoological content. Three pages towards the middle of the volume appear to have been written later in the 1840s and contains tables of weather conditions tracking for 1843-1847 (including barometer readings, thermometer readings, and pluviometer readings).
