Located on a triangular parcel, Cambridge Center was designed as a mixed-use development project in an area known as Kendall Square. Safdie's master plan called for several mid- and high-rise office and research buildings, a 25-storey hotel, and a street-level retail centre. The hotel encloses Cambridge Plaza and is the primary public focal point of the complex. The plaza paving and features were designed by world-renowned artist Karl Schlamminger of Germany.

Canadian Museum for Human Rights Competition

The vision for the project was to create a distinctive, architecturally exceptional museum that will help to eliminate intolerance through recognition of human rights as the foundation for human equality, dignity, and freedom worldwide. The museum has made groundbreaking history, as it will be the largest and perhaps only human rights museum in the world. The issue of human rights is of such a worldwide concern that the decision was made to conduct an international architectural competition to select an architect and design for this important project. Ultimately, the competition was won by Dan Hanganu Architects and The Arcop Group.

Canadian Pavilion

Moshe Safdie's proposal was among 208 entries for the architectural competition for the Canadian Government Pavilion at the 1970 Japan World Exposition in Osaka. Safdie explored two radically different concepts. The first used a group of balloon-like elements inflated with a light gas. The second scheme, which was developed in greater detail, called for a cellular building made from modular units constructed of cubes subtended by octahedrons. The entire pavilion was to be a continuous experience of changing images and colours in which various surfaces within the cube and the octahedron were used as projection surfaces.

"Architectural Drawings, 1963-8, 237 drawings." Measured drawings of historic architecture by students of Anderson are found in the archive. Also included are drawings of windmill machinery. The drawings have been accessioned but they have not been described.
"Photographs, 1964-7, 46 photographs." Included are photographs of windmills and miscellaneous negatives of measured drawings of historic architecture by Laval students. (see Anderson & Students 42.01) The photographs have been accessioned but they have not been described.

"Architectural Drawings, 1900-7, 17 drawings." Included are measured drawings of Italian architecture and measured drawings and sketches of architecture in Montreal. In addition, there are five drawings, primarily elevations, of the MacDonald Engineering Building of McGill University depicting the building after it was ruined by a fire on April 5, 1907. The MacDonald Engineering Building was designed by Andrew Thomas Taylor (1850-1937) and George William Hamilton Gordon (ca. 1854-1906) in 1893.

This project consists of 267 units of housing designed to be occupied by moderate income, permanent residents who are employed in the Aspen area. The three-story structures utilize prefabricated modular wooden units, completed off-site, to reduce on-site construction time which is limited due to weather conditions. The buildings are clustered around open spaces and have glass enclosed terraces which overlook panoramic views of the resort community of Aspen and Aspen Mountain. The units are entered from parking areas at the rear of the complex. The project was realized during the 1984 construction season.

The fonds contains drawings for six projects (18 originals and 1 copy) dating from 1835-1850, including the Manchester Atheneum (1836-1839), the Italianate Trentham Hall in Staffordshire (1934-1949), the Houses of Parliament (1836) in London at Westminster (elevations, perspective and details) and the Reform Club in London (1837-1841).

Chongqing Villas

Chongqing Villas

Located on a broad hillside site adjacent to Chongqing’s well-known Eling Park, the design for the Eling Residences grows out of and echoes the dramatic natural topography of the site.

The buildings are organized with terracing villa units climbing the rock slopes and stepping up to the crest of the hill where, along the ridge line, two dome-shaped structures overlook the city. The location and organization of the low-rise terraced buildings endows each of the 126 apartments with natural daylight and affords uninterrupted views of the Yuzhong Peninsula and the Yangtze River. Interwoven with the buildings is a lush landscape comprised of cascading gardens, terraces, overlooks, stairs, and promenades for the residents to enjoy.

At the western edge of the site, a prominent 4-story clubhouse stands as a beacon for the project, signifying the entrance to both Eling Park and the development.

The terraces of the hilltop units provide uninterrupted views to the Yangtze River and city beyond. Each terrace serves as an extension of the apartment, maximizing residents’ access to light and air. Planters are integrated along the length of the terraces, and climbing plants will grow up the trellises to provide additional shading.
