    Biographical history

    Born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1830, the daughter of a merchant, Margaret A. Y. Mercer married John William Dawson in March of 1847. The couple lived at 293 University Street, Montreal. One of her sons, George Mercer Dawson (1849–1901), became a well known and respected scientist and geologist like his father. She died in September of 1913.

    Files in series consist chiefly of materials from accessions 0000-0976, 0000-1421, and 0000-1421B, as well as 0000-1463, 0000-1377, 0000-1443; one letter from accession 0000-1584 and 0000-2211.

    Scope and content

    The papers of Margaret Mercer Dawson consist of 6 cm of letters from her husband, 1848-1873; 14 cm from her children, 1858-1906, including a majority of letters from Anna Harrington; 13 cm from her Scottish relatives and friends, 1836-1907, including Peter Bell, Isabella Hall, Marion Mercer, and Walter Mercer ; and 35 cm (approximately one-third undated) from friends, 1855-1906, including J. Sybil Wilson. All of the letters are incoming correspondence to Margaret Mercer Dawson.
