Montreal Mendelssohn Choir donation

The Montreal Mendelssohn Choir donated eight volumes of choral sheet music from the Choir’s library in 1895, a year after the Choir’s dissolution. There are only seven extant volumes in the collection because volume 6 has been missing since at least the 1980s.

D. Torrance Fraser donation

Three volumes of choral sheet music from the Choir’s library were donated to McGill University by the Estate of D. Torrance Fraser, a former choir member, in 1926. The pieces in these three volumes are second copies of those pieces found in Series 1. In 1927, another volume of sheet music from the Choir’s library was donated to McGill University by the Estate of D. Torrance Fraser. This fourth volume (DTF2) contains many pieces not found in the other volumes.

Studies and Analyses

The Studies & Analyses Series contains Schloss’s academic work from his studies at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt and under Alban Berg, as well as his analyses of works by other composers. Listed items are grouped by genre: academic studies, analyses of works by other composers, studies of unknown works, transcriptions of melodies, and sketches.

Programmes and Scripts

The Programmes and Scripts series contains programmes of Donald Mackey and the Church of Messiah and the Renaissance Singers of Montreal in performance; as well as scripts and programming for the following series presented/performed by the Renaissance Singers: CBC broadcasts not in a series, Christian Frontiers, Sunday Chorale and Good Friday.

The Clippings series contains newspaper clippings of publicity, articles and reviews concerning performances, broadcasts and recordings of the Renaissance Singers of Montreal.

Administrative Materials

The Administration Materials series contains documentation pertaining to the management and chronology of the Renaissance Singers of Montreal.

Correspondence

The Correspondence series contains cards and letters to or from Donald Mackey and the Renaissance Singers of Montreal. The series is arranged chronologically by time period as indicated. The series includes correspondence of special note from Reverend Brian D. Freeland of the Canadian Broadcasting Company.

Compositions

The Compositions Series contains Schloss’s 29 completed compositions and arrangements and 6 unfinished works. The works are arranged alphabetically by uniform title. Composition dates, durations and instrumentation are provided when possible. Instrumentation for large ensemble works is listed according to the schema [Fl Cl Ob Bs – Hn Tp Tb Tu – Perc – Str] with supplementary instruments listed.

The Concerts & Competitions Series contains programs, correspondence and reviews for performances of Schloss’s compositions. Items are arranged by date of event.
