Canadian newspapers

This subseries consists of Canadian newspapers primarily from the 1970s collected by Roy States, including 45 issues of Contrast (between Sept. 16, 1970 and Nov. 8, 1979), 16 issues of Oracle (between Nov. 4, 1976 and May 19, 1977), scattered issues of Uhuru, The Black voice, Ebony Express, Atlantic Black journal, Grasp, The Islander, and some single issues, including of Black Labour, Bulletin Maison d'Haiti, and others.

Winslow-Spragge family

Company Promotions

This subseries contains records related to J.W. McConnell’s career between 1900-1930. The records in this subseries are scattered and do not necessarily reflect McConnell’s full role in the various companies he worked with during this period.

Material found in this subseries includes ledgers and record books of various companies in which McConnell was involved, personal ledgers used by McConnell for his finances, charter and minute extracts from the Standard Chemical Company, and financial and bank statements.

Albums and scrapbooks

This subseries consists of two volumes of clippings and photocopies: a photo album pertaining chiefly to notable Black historical figures, and a scrapbook pertaining to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Album and realia

This subseries consists of one volume and two objects. The volume is a photo album with brown covers and plastified adhesive pages containing a collection of clippings, photographs and other documents. It is titled "The life and times of Roy Wellington States, volume II". There is no corresponding "volume I" which is explicitly labeled as such in the collection. The two objects are a framed certificate, signed by Governor General of Canada Jules Léger, which accompanied the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal presented to States, and an engraved brass plaque, mounted on wood, presented to States by the National Black Coalition of Canada.

Education and awards

This sub-series documents Madeleine Parent's academic achievement, honorary doctorates, and recognitions. Materials include primary and secondary school certificates and report cards, and awards. There are also files with documentation on honorary doctorates Parent received from various Canadian universities. Awarding universities include Windsor University, Athabasca University, Carleton University, and Trent University. Moreover, there is a file on her nomination to the Canadian Labour Hall of Fame. It is important to note that only a photocopy exists for some certificates and awards.
