Menu Collection

Collection consists of menus acquired individually by the library. Menus date back to 1877, but most of the menus are twentieth century. The bulk of menus are from Montreal-area restaurants and hotels, representing French, Quebecois, and other styles of cuisine such as Indian. Some menus are from specific dinners given at hotels, special events, or in honour of dignitaries, such as a dinner for Edward, Prince of Wales, 1919. A subset of menus relate specifically to travel and include train dining car menus and steamship menus.

McGill receptions ephemera

This file contains ephemera from receptions held at McGill, including a partial programme for a reception in honour of the British Medical Association (ca. 1897); an invitation addressed to J.P. Chalifoux for a reception in honour of Jean Ethier-Blais, winner of the 6th Prix France-Canada (7 November 1967); an invitation addressed to Elizabeth A. Lewis to Quarter Century Club reception (20 October 1983); a menu for a reception in honour of Dr. Leo Yaffe (29 May 1981); and an invitation addressed to Robert E. Bell for a reception following a concert by the McGill Chamber Orchestra (18 January 1982).

This file contains McGill programmes and booklets, including "Epimetheus to my students" a poem by J. Clark Murray (ca. 1900); ticket and programme for staff dinner to the Principal of McGill (29 November 1935); programme for the Leacock Luncheon celebrating the centenary of Stephen Leacock's birth (16 October 1970); programme for McGill Savoy Society production of Gilbert and Sullivan's "Ruddigore" signed by the cast with a clipping about the production (26 Feburary-1 March 1969); programme for McGill Savoy Society production of Gilbert and Sullivan's "H.M.S. Pinafore" (1970-1971); booklet containing "The need for dormitories at McGill" by Stephen Leacock (ca. 1921); four tickets and signed programme for McGill Savoy Society production of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance" (25-28 February 1970); Cosmo Club and 1947 freshman guide; programme for the 44th Medical Dinner (13 February 1926).

McGill dinner invitations, menus, and programmes

This file contains invitations, programmes, and menus for McGill-affiliated dinners, including convocation lunch, graduation and reunion dinners, and dinners given by people or organizations affiliated with McGill. Interesting highlights include a dinner in honour of Maurice Duplessis (7 January 1937) and a dinner honouring "members of the South African Contingents" (19 April 1901). Two menus from 1920-1921 belonged to Maude E.M. Olding, and four invitations from 1982 belonged to R.E. Bell.

Tobin's papers consist of a scrapbook and photo album containing programmes, menus and newspaper clippings concerning the "King Cook" celebrations, 1911-1927, newspaper obituaries and photographs of Medical Faculty professors, programmes for social events of the Medical Society, Pharmaceutical Society and the McGill Employees Association (of which Tobin was secretary) and letters of recommendation from the Medical Students Society, 1921-1931.

Convocation ephemera

This file contains ephemera related to McGill convocations, including a convocation dinner menu (1949, belonging to Mr. Pennington), a convocation seating chart (1951), convocation tickets (1905 and 1927), an invitation to a convocation address by the governor general (ca. 1907-1918), and a convocation programme (1914).

McGill reunion ephemera

This file contains McGill reunion ephemera, including a programme for a 125th anniversary reunion dinner (5 October 1946), two copies of the programme for the Old McGill 125th anniversary reunion (3-6 October 1946), a programme for a McGill medical graduates reunion and formal opening of the new medical building (5-6 June 1911), programme for a reunion of McGill medical graduates (6-7 June 1910).
