General note

This file seems to consist, for the most part, of "unpublished miscellany" (W/U) files. It looks as though the items were originally filed in the annual General Correspondence, and, when that was cleared and boxed, rather than placing the file in the individual MSS. envelopes, a more convenient catch-all file was kept by the secretaries for easy reference. It should not be assumed that all relevant correspondence is here; some items may have reached the manuscript files. However, this section has been cross-indexed in considerable detail and a check of the card index ought to provide file numbers for all related papers. (Note by Althea Douglas, April 1981.)
