Biographical history

William Tees Curran was a mining promoter, prospector, former President of the Ungava Miners & Traders Limited, and author. He worked alongside Harold A. Calkins and Horace F. Strong, whom were both McGill graduates. Curran was an elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, London on November 27th 1922.

His published works include:
-In Canada's wonderful northland; a story of eight months of travel by canoe, motorboat, and dog-team on t he northern rivers and along the New Quebec coast of Hudson bay - by Curran and H.A. Calkins (published by G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1917).
-Glimpses of northern Canada: the land of hidden treasure - by Curran and Horace P. Adams (published in Montreal by Cambridge Corp, circa 1910).

Custodial history

Materials were transferred to the McGill University Archives from Library and Archives Canada, and received on January 5, 2011. They were originally owned by Carol Chapman, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Cassard whom were share holders in Ungava Miners & Traders Limited, and also friends of William Tees Curran.

Scope and content

The fonds consist mainly of correspondence and shareholder reports. The development of Ungava Miners & Traders Limited is well documented in Curran's letters to the Cassards. The letters do not discuss the topic of geology from a scientific perspective, but instead illustrate the development of the mining industry and also provide a good account of what it would have been like to expand a business in early 20th century Canada.
