Biographical history

Vera Frenkel (born November 10, 1938) is a Canadian artist born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, who now resides in Toronto. Her diverse artistic endeavors include installations, videotapes, performances, and new media projects. Frenkel's works explore themes of human migration, cultural memory, and the increasing bureaucratization of human experience. After graduating from McGill University with a degree in Fine Arts in 1959, Frenkel continued her studies in Montreal under Arthur Lismer and Albert Dumouchel. Since the early 1970s, she has participated in solo and group exhibitions both in Canada and internationally. Notable venues include Documenta IX, the Offenes Kulturhaus in Linz, the Setagaya Art Museum in Tokyo, the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Biennale di Venezia.
