General note

In the boreal forest of northern Quebec, a multidisciplinary team undertook a study for a proposed new town. Its location was governed by the proximity of a new iron mine as well as the existing towns in Labrador, namely the town of Gagnon. In 1970, a new townsite, Fermont, was proposed to provide a community for a work force of 1,600 people and their families. Swedish architect Ralph Erskine served on the Design Panel and provided a number of key ideas including the 'Windscreen Building', similar in concept to projects he had designed for resource towns in northern Sweden.

General note

The drawing folder contains many drawings and sketches done by Professor Norbert Schoenauer, John's personal friend and collaborator, who was involved in much of the new-town planning and layout.
