Born in Bonchurch, Isle of Wight, Hadfield moved to America while in his youth. He was, for a while, a cotton merchant. He was a personal friend of James McGill and documented the commercial fur trade in Canada in the late 18th century.
File contains an account of the visit of Joseph Hadfield to the Niagara Falls and surrounding area. A description of the Falls is given. Hadfield outlines his activities and travels in the summer of 1785. Some physical description of the Great Lakes area is given.
This account has also been transcribed and added to D. S. Robertson's 'An Englishman in America, 1785, being the diary of Joseph Hadfield'. Available at McGill University Library E164 H34 1933.
