Norman William Trenholme was born on August 18, 1837, in Kingsey, Drummond County, Quebec.
He was a lawyer, politician, and educator. He graduated from Mcgill University (B.A., B.C.L, 1863; M.A., 1878; D.C.L., 1887). In 1865, he passed the Bar and became Professor of Roman and Civil Law at McGill (1868-1888). In 1888, he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Law (1888-1895). Trenholme also served as Judge of the Superior Court of Quebec for the district of Montreal (1901-1904) and Judge of the Court of Queen's Bench from 1904 until his death in 1919. He was elected Mayor of the city of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce annexed to Montreal in 1910. Parc Trenholme located in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce in Montreal is named in his honour.
In 1868, he married Lucy Wilkes Hedge (1841–1885), and in 1886, he remarried Grace Lowe Shaw (1849–1928). He died on June 25, 1919, in Montreal, Quebec.
