Inscription (transcribed from verso): No. 59. Melon deau. Grand. nat. au Cap le 17 juin 1783. Rabié / [in pencil] En gros une pasteque [...] / no. 59 / melon d’eau ou Pasteque, avec une partie de sa tige et sa feuille. Le melon est le même que celui d’europe, mais beaucoup plus doux que celui de france.

Inscription (from verso; translation): No. 59. Watermelon. Natural size, at Cap-Haïtien, 17 June 1783. Rabié / [in pencil] Essentially a “pasteque” (watermelon) [...] / no. 59 / Watermelon, with part of its stem and its leaf. The melon is the same as the one in Europe, but much sweeter than the one in France.
