Eberts Family Fonds

This fonds reflects the Eberts family history, was assembled mainly by Hermann Joseph Eberts, Edmund Melchior Eberts and Hermann Livingstone Eberts. Half of the fonds consist mainly of family correspondence, mostly dating from 1877 to 1982, addressed either to H. J. Eberts, E. M. Eberts, H. L. Eberts or their respective spouses. In addition, there is a copy of H.M. Eberts will (1819) and a letter concerning the estate of his wife Marie-Francoise Hue (1826). This collection also contains several copies of letters of nobility granted to Jacob Friederich Eberts in 1658, Hermann Melchior Eberts’ original of Army Discharge (1777), a notebook (1810-1838) belonging to Joseph Eberts (1785-1838), H. J. Eberts’ diary (1861), a variety of legal documents including deeds of sale, wills, birth and marriage certificates, mortgage documents, as well as school reports. Included is also H. M. Eberts’ licence to practice medicine in Quebec (1788), and documents relating to H. M. Eberts in his role as Sheriff of Wayne County, Michigan (1796-1798). In addition, there are genealogical trees, newspaper clippings, and publications relating to the background of the family, as well as a 288 page typescript history of the family written by E. M. Eberts in 1944. Lastly, this collection contains family photographs (1890-1980) and army photographs (1924-1939, 1960’s).

Eberts family

Earl of Selkirk Collection

The thirteen documents are depositions taken by Lord Selkirk concerning the conflict with the North West Company at the Red River Settlement in Manitoba and at Fort William. On 11 June 1815, representatives of the North West Company attacked and fired upon the colonists, and demanded the surrender of Governor MacDonell, who, to avoid the loss of blood, gave himself up voluntarily. He was taken to Montreal as a prisoner, and charges were laid against him by his enemies, but his case was not tried. These depositions concern this case.

"Architectural Drawings, 1955-69, 219 drawings." Architectural drawings documenting eleven projects are found in the CAC. The majority of the drawings are designs for a residential dwelling for J. A. Laing on lie Bizard, PQ (1961-2); other Montreal projects represented in the archives include additions and alterations to the house of N. L. C. Mather in Westmount (1959-60), an addition to the Canadian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals building on Jean Talon (1962-64), alterations to St. George's Church and a number of alterations to the Sommer Building on Mayor Street (1955-69).

Duncan Stuart Forbes Fonds

These papers contain Forbes' personal files of correspondence and clippings, some design materials and films of McGill football games. The personal files contain biographical materials such as his birth certificate, military commission and service records, and letters concerning his employment at McGill. Other files concern Forbes' designs for decorations for the 1951 Royal Visit, the McGill C.O.T.C., the Forbes Trophy for athletics, Forbes' involvement with McGill athletics and museums, and the career of his brother Kenneth Forbes, a painter. A number of diplomas and certificates awarded Forbes, as well as a photograph album, complete this series. Materials for designs include files on heraldry, a collection of illustrations from 19th century periodicals, designs for the Royal Visit decorations (a few, by Percy Nobbs, were used for the 1939 visit), maps, linocuts, bookplates, and programmes designed by Forbes for McGill events, ca 1925-1950. Thirty-four reels of motion picture film record McGill extramural football games (1947-1951). Films with sound track show the construction of the Currie gymnasium (1939-1940), and demonstrate the swimming techniques of Matt Mann. Additional biographical material is provided by obituary notices and letters of condolence to Mrs. Forbes, and by clippings of articles about Forbes.
