Teaching and Administrative Activities

Series consists of lecture notes, course outlines and exams for courses given in areas such as Canadian politics, Canadian foreign policy, international relations and politics and communications by Dale Thomson at the Université de Montréal (1960-1969), Johns Hopkins University (1969-1973) and McGill University (1973-1994). There are also some files relating to university administrative activities. Series is arranged according to institution and courses, with individual files containing specific lecture information.

Teaching

A small number of files relate to Jasper’s teaching activities in the department of Physiology at the Université de Montréal, 1966-1975 (Container 8, Files 342-354). These contain class outlines, exams, and lecture notes. A list of graduate and postdoctoral students supervised by Jasper is also available, 1933-1976 (Container 8, File 348). Some administrative correspondence from the Universite de Montreal also relates to Jasper’s teaching activities, 1978-1993 (Container 4, File 194).

Teaching.

Materials relating to James' teaching career fall into two chronological categories, the Wharton period and the McGill period. The Wharton period is illustrated by office files (1927-1939) containing incoming and outgoing correspondence, reports and memoranda concerning the administration of the school and professional matters. There are also lecture notes for James' courses in finance (1926-1927), money and credit (1924-1949), theory of money and banking (ca 1939), statistics, and life insurance. The McGill material comprises lecture notes for introductory economics (1944-1949), together with some worked examination papers and approximately 15 cm of correspondence regarding the course, as well as James' relations with Québec economic groups; there are also lecture notes for a course in economic history (1940, 1954-1959).

Subject files/consults

This series contains subject files including some professional consultations on ethical issues such as AIDS, same-sex marriage, pain management, euthanasia, health care policy, and blood systems as well as research notes on drug abuse, immigration, the Cross Culture Project and Bill C-203.

Subject Files

Lists, charts, regulations, office guidelines, and constitutions and by-laws, whether individual files or consolidated as in the Montreal Council of Social Agencies Manual (file 168), are major components of Subject Files. Some of the holdings of this series and Administrative Records are closely related, but where the latter reveal more of the day-to-day function and process, Subject Files predominantly indicate the structure and regulations within which such process or administration took place. By the same token, blank or sample membership applications or other business forms are found here, while the same completed records are in other series as appropriate by provenance and function. Subject Files also hold some miscellaneous reference materials such as Activities and Interests of Health Sections and Health Councils in Other Cities in the U.S. and Canada (file 511), and the Canadian Children's Charter (file 629).

Student years at Brentwood College and McGill

This series consists of correspondence with Robertson’s family, addressed to his father and family, dealing with daily school activities and athletic accomplishments; as well, several letters, postcards, artifacts, and photos document Robertson’s educational and travel experiences in Switzerland, 1925-1926 (Container 4, File 89). Also included are Rhodes scholarship nomination letters, written by Brentwood College and St. Michael’s School teachers, praising Robertson’s academic ability, athletic prowess, and natural leadership skills. Although he applied, he did not receive this scholarship. Robertson’s early leadership potential manifested itself in his appointment as head prefect at St. Michael’s School and as head boy during his time at Brentwood College. This series also includes photos of tennis and rugby sports teams, medals, and school crests, 1929-1931 (Container 4, File 90).

During his last two years at McGill, H. Rocke Robertson received the distinction of being the top medical student, which is documented through newspaper clippings, 1935-1936 (Container 1, File 2). Also included in the series are mock menus reflecting the comedic efforts of medical students, 1935-1936 (Container 1, File 2). Several artifacts, including McGill crests and tennis crests, 1930-1935 (Container 7, File 144) reflect Robertson’s scholarly and athletic achievements at McGill.
