Yugoslavia Pavilion

Exterior view photograph. Yugoslavia Pavilion exterior (lot C-424). The simple yet striking roof lines of the Yugoslavia Pavilion made it a memorable Expo pavilion. The rectangular plan contained exhibition spaces and a theatre. Exhibits shared the country's rich history and culture. Native music playing in the background added to the high spirited mood. The story of Man and his World then moved on to contemporary life of Yugoslavia. Among the display of contemporary art were priceless national treasures. The industry-themed exhibit explored the use of production as a means for democratic life. The theatre featured Yugoslavian films, cartoons and documentaries. It was also the stage for live concerts by Yugoslavian artists. Five vertical, triangular elements. Structural steel with cocoon vinyl coating on plywood. Youth Pavilion

Exterior view photograph. Youth Pavilion exterior (lot D-529). Thirty-three Canadian youth organizations joined together to realize the Youth Pavilion. 12 main exhibition cells, each with a different theme, were arranged around a central open court. Among the activity areas were a theatre, a cafe and snack bar, and a TV show area. The central court served as an open air amphiteatre. At night, one of the exhibition cells became a discotheque. Young performers and artists from around the world shared their talents at the Youth Pavilion. 12 rectangular volumes arranged in a circle with angular roof formation. Balloon frame wood studs with stucco on gypsum lath. (S: 200' diameter --- A: 18,000 sq. ft. --- H: 40' (to top of mechanical loft), 8' - 18' high cells.)

World War I photograph album

The file contains a photograph album of photographs taken during Clare Gass's deployment in Europe with the Canadian Expeditionary Force from approximatley April 1915 to 1918. The earliest photograph dates from April 1915 and depicts Gass and other nursing sisters assembled for inspection in front of the Montreal General Hospital before their deployment. Photographs probably from May 1915 depict their sea crossing to Europe on the Metagama. There are photographs from multiple places in France including Etaples (France) (1915), Camiers (the No. 3 Canadian General Hospital) (1915). and Boulogne (1916-1917, including No. 7 Convalescent Camp), as well as Gass's postings in Clivedon, England (1918) and Rhyl, North Wales (1918). Many photographs depict "the lines" of the various camps, with tent and building exteriors and interiors, including living quarters, nurses' "huts" and hospital wards. There are also photographs of soldiers' entertainments, including shows and costumed performers. Leaves 13 and 14 of the photograph album also contain the an early appearence of the text of John McCrae's “In Flanders Field.” The poem accompanies two photographs of recent graves. Other photographs depict landscapes, sites, and local activities in the regions where she was stationed. Some photographs were taken during various leaves, including a trip to Scotland in 1917 and Leicester. Some photographs also depict Gass's brother Cyril, including following his injury and during his convalescence.

Witter Bynner correspondence

File consists of correspondence with Witter Bynner. Letters frequently refer to Kiang's publication The Jade Mountain, of which Bynner was the translator. Also included is a copy of Bynner's letter to the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation regarding a fellowship for Kiang.
