The fonds contains architectural drawings and textual records documenting Montreal projects by the architect John Smith Archibald as well as the various firms with which he was associated, including Saxe & Archibald, Archibald & Illsley, and Archibald, Illsley & Templeton. The architectural projects documented in the fonds include hotels, clubs, office and commercial buildings, homes, railway stations, churches, and schools.

The subfonds contains 74 architectural drawings, 1948-1957. Four Montreal projects are documented by drawings: they include the Monklands High School, an office building to accommodate Postal Station B, proposed alterations to the Windsor Hotel for an airline office, and an addition to West Hill High School.

Photographs

Series consists chiefly of architectural photography from Italy and France, featuring building exteriors and exteriors and details such as doorways, crests, and capitals. Photographs are mostly undated. One file contains photographs of public buildings in the United States and one photograph of a Royal Canadian Mounted Police garage in Montreal Quebec.

Papers of John S. Archibald and Associates

The Archibald papers in the Canadian Architecture Collection constitute only a very small portion of the architects' professional and/or personal records, since the office records and the private correspondence of John S. Archibald and his associates are not represented in their entirety. The papers, given to the archive by Hugh Percival (Peter) Illsley, consist primarily of photographic reproductions and postcards of buildings in Europe. Also included with this original material is related information gathered over the years by John Bland dealing with different aspects of John S. Archibald and Charles J. Saxe's professional activities.

Monklands High School

Includes 15 plans (2 elevations; 1 section; 2 plan/elev ./sect.) and 6 detail drawings (sections, interior sections, schedules, doors, stairs , finishes, entrance and incinerator) for the Monklands High School, later renamed West Hill High School. A. Leslie Perry was Associate Architect on this project.

Office Building to Accommodate Postal Station B

Includes 1 perspective, 21 plans, 1 section, 3 elevations, 1 plan/elev./sect., 7 details (stone, marble, night lobby, sub-basement, rear counter, lettering, window, lavatories, penthouse, exterior walls, stair landings, elevator lobby, schedules, floors 3-10, furnace stack) for post office. Gustave Beault, F.R.A.I.C., Chief Architect of the Dept. of Public Works Canada was Associate Architect. Includes working and detail drawings for a two-storey building on the same site and with the same floor plans. The building was possibly completed in two phases.

Subfonds contains 9 undated architectural drawings. Included are plans, elevations, and sections for the design of the Pitcher House.
