  • 1816-1888

The collection consists of falls into two series: Papers and Diaries. The Papers primarily reflect Brown's political concerns and activities in Montreal between 1832 and 1838. They include excerpts from the Vindicator newspaper, notes, resolutions, memoranda and speeches, as well as letters to Brown concerning Florida politics and the United States' negotiations with Native peoples, 1841-1843. There are also business documents and letters; essays by Brown on the 1837-1838 Lower Canada Rebellion and the annexation of Canada; and a journal kept during an ocean voyage in 1838.

The Diaries consist of seven notebooks written in pencil, or perhaps more properly dictated, by Brown in 1887-1888. They were transcribed by F. J. Nobbs in 1987.

Papers

The series consists of business and legal documents, correspondence, addresses and memoranda, and newspapers. Many of the legal and business documents are concerned with insolvency cases in Montreal, 1841-1875. While most of the material relates to Brown's political activities and business in Canada, some letters relate to the United States, particularly Florida, and its expulsion of Native peoples. The series includes an index of the Vindicator, 4 Nov. 1836 to 7 Nov. 1837, as well as a journal Brown kept aboard the Mary Frances during a sea voyage in 1838.

Newspapers

File consists of 6 newspapers and clippings, including: a cutting from La Patrie, 30 December 1888 (In Memoriam, a biographical sketch of T. S. Brown, by L. J. A. Papineau); The News, St. Augustine, 11 May 1844; The News, St. Augustine, 26 February 1841; Canada First, vol. 1, no. 7, Montreal, 28 January 1882; Canada First, vol. 1, no. 5, Montreal, 14 January 1881; and the Montreal Daily Star, 27 December 1888.

Miscellaneous documents

File consists of four copies of T. S. Brown's coat of arms, three blank cheques on Banque du Peuple, a programme of entertainments in Victoria Rink for the 1886-1887 season, a sale catalogue of T. S. Brown's household furniture, 20 April 1875 (with original and duplicate), and a genealogy of Hughes of Gwerclas.
