Correspondence, 1835-1838

Political, business, and personal correspondence. The letters are mostly addressed to Henry S. Chapman (nine letters), with others addressed to Thomas Falconer (five letters), Samuel Revans (four letters), Chapman and Falconer (one letter) and D. Daly, possibly Sir Dominick Daly (one letter). The creators of the letters include Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan (seven letters), François Antoine LaRocque (5 letters), Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine (four letters), Jacob DeWitt (one letter), and Claude Perrault (one letter). The earlier letters chiefly concern business interests, including the establishment of a Canadian Company house in London, as well as the partnership between LaRoque and Revans. The letters from 1837 and 1838 have a much more informal tone, and focus on political reform and the events during and following the Upper and Lower Canada Rebellions of 1837-1838.

Correspondence, 1839, 1842, 1853

Business, political, and personal correspondence. All letters are addressed to Henry S. Chapman, sent to him by Louis Joseph Papineau (2 letters), Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan (2 letters), and an unidentified correspondent. Contents of letters include the financial fallout of the seizure of Samuel Revans's business interests in Montreal after the 1937 rebellion, as well as correspondence of a more personal nature from friends involved in political reform.

  • 1833-1853

This collection reflects Henry S. Chapman's relationships with a number of important figures in Montreal's political and business history, between roughly 1833 and 1853, the period following Chapman's return to London. A significant amount of the material in this collection is related to the 1837-1838 Upper and Lower Canada Rebellions (especially in Montreal), as well as events occurring immediately after the uprisings.

Consists of copies of original material, chiefly correspondence, arranged roughly by date. The contents of letters (1835-1853) include business partnerships, political reform, and personal news. Significant correspondents include Louis-Joseph Papineau, Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine, Jacob Dewitt, François-Antoine Larocque (of Laroque and Bernard), Joseph Perreault, and Edmund Bailey O’Callaghan. There is also a partial manuscript on Canadian history and pages from a scrapbook, both dating from the 1830s.

Chapman, Henry Samuel, 1803-1881

History of Canada

Two partial manuscripts: pages 9-10 of a manuscript about the Éloge de La Peyronie and the Royal College of Surgeons (covering roughly the 1830s) and pages 499-677 of a manuscript about the history of Canada (covering roughly 1812-1835). Both manuscripts are in the same hand. The second manuscript begins with a page that is partially crossed out with the note "printed" next to it, and is divided into chapters, including part of chapter 18 through chapter 24 of the original manuscript.
