Biographical history
Herbert Raine was born on December 2, 1875, in Sunderland, England.
He was known as a talented etcher and water colourist. He studied architecture with Frank Caws, FRIBA, in London. He was also a pupil at the Royal Academy Schools for five years, then worked briefly for W. J. Gilliland in Belfast before moving to London to join the office of Sir Aston Webb in 1898. In 1902, he formed a partnership with Charles R. Mitchell in London. In 1907, they both emigrated to Canada and settled in Montreal, Quebec where they collaborated on several projects and competitions entries. In later years, he devoted his energies to the pursuit of etching and watercolour. He was noted for his scenes of old Montreal and rural Quebec. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art and the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers. He was also a President of the Arts Club in Montreal.
He died on May 24, 1951, in Montreal, Quebec.
Custodial history
The European drawings were formerly used as teaching aids at the McGill University School of Architecture.
Drawings for the McConnell residence were donated to the John Bland Canadian Architecture Collection by Kathleen McConnell Laing. Also part of the donation were drawings and photographs of other residences for J. W. McConnell.

Scope and content
"Architectural Drawings, 1898-1901, 18 drawings." Included are drawings of historic architecture in England, France and Italy, such as stalls in Southwold Church in Suffolk, sculpture at Chartres Cathedral, the Palazzo Pitti and the Palazzo Gondi in Florence.

The Montreal architect Herbert Raine (1875-1951) was born in England and studied at the Royal Academy School in London. After travelling to Italy, he returned to England in order to practice architecture. In 1907 he emigrated to Canada. While Raine was a practicing architect throughout his life, he was also an accomplished artist.

Après avoir voyagé en Italie, il est revenu en Angleterre pour y exercer l'architecture. En 1907, il a émigré au Canada.
