File
This file pertains to the Royal Canadian Legion. Many of the items relate to the Dr. Gaspard Royal Canadian Legion Branch no. 50 in Montreal. The branch was originally established as the Coloured War Veterans' Legion (Quebec no. 50) and was chartered in March 1935; it became the only legion in Canada for Black veterans, who were often not welcome in other legions. One of its founders was Dominique François Gaspard, a physician who served in France during the First Forld War and who was a respected doctor and social trailblazer in Montreal's Black district. In 1953, 15 years after his death, Black veterans in Montreal renamed the branch in his honour. It was disbanded in 1970.
The group photograph featuring Capt. W. A. White Post presenting a wheelchair to a hospital in Boston was previously mounted in a black plastic sleeve with a clear plastic window in the front. The plastic sleeve have been removed for preservation purposes.
