Biographical history

Quebec notary, Gustave Baudoin, had an important influence on the architectural heritage of the province. It was the 1919 publication in La Revue nationale of his article, “Nos vieilles églises: la désolation des monuments historiques canadiens” that helped inspire McGill professor Ramsay Traquair’s efforts to record and protect Quebec’s historic buildings, leading to the founding in 1922 of the Commission des monuments historiques, which was mandated to protect the disappearing patrimony. This resulted in the Quebec law on the protection of historic monuments. Baudoin also wrote the occasional article for the nationalist magazine Action Française.
