John Petch was born on April 28, 1843, in York County, Ontario.
He was an educator. After graduating from Victoria College, Toronto, in 1877 (B.A.), he taught in high school and studied in Europe for ten years. In 1889, he was appointed Professor of Romance Languages (Italian) in Victoria College. From 1891 to 1897, he was Professor of French Language and Literature, but failing health cut short his final year.
In 1877, he married Sarah Jane Mills (1846–1928). He died on June 26, 1897, in Toronto, Ontario.

He is an American editor, poet, and technical writer. He was educated at Western Washington University (B.A. in Education and English, 1974) and Shoreline Community College (A.A. in Music). In 1976, he became an Editor-in-Chief and owner of Laughing Bear Press which published Laughing Bear Magazine, Laughing Bear Newsletter, and poetry books under the Laughing Bear imprint from 1976 to 2008. From 1977 to 1979, he served as a Faculty Adviser at Shoreline Community College. He has been a technical writer since 1980 in the Power Generation, Defense, Software, and Financial Industries.
In 1990, he married Frances Louise Schroeder.
