History

John Petch was born on April 28, 1843, in York County, Ontario.

He was an educator. After graduating from Victoria College, Toronto, in 1877 (B.A.), he taught in high school and studied in Europe for ten years. In 1889, he was appointed Professor of Romance Languages (Italian) in Victoria College. From 1891 to 1897, he was Professor of French Language and Literature, but failing health cut short his final year.

In 1877, he married Sarah Jane Mills (1846–1928). He died on June 26, 1897, in Toronto, Ontario.
