Sophia Amelia Browne was born in 1852 in Quebec. She was the sister of Arthur Adderly Browne. In 1879, she married the brewer John Labatt and moved to London, Ontario. When she died in 1906, the cause of death was listed as "poisoned by mistake."

Arthur Adderly Browne received his M.D. at McGill University in 1872. He was an intimate friend of Sir William Osler in the latter’s Montreal years. They did post graduate studies in Europe, 1872-1874. Browne was an Elective Fellow of the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University in 1879 and Professor of Midwifery and Children’s Diseases from 1883 to 1887. He died in Montreal in 1910.

Effie Laura Browne (born Manby) was born in March 1857 in Smethwick, Staffordshire, England. In 1878, she married Walter Raleigh Browne (1843-1884) in Hanover, Jamaica. They had two children during their marriage. In August 1884 she traveled with her husband to Canada to attend a meeting for the British Science Association. After they arrived in Montreal, he became ill and suffered from typhoid fever. He was taken to a hospital but died on 4 September 1884. Effie Laura died on April 10, 1941, in Bournstream, Gloucestershire, England.
