1 illustration : colour, watercolour and gouache ; 35.5 x 29.2 cm
Item consists of a pencil and partially-coloured illustration of a brown bird poised on a branch, with identification and description in pen in contemporary hand: A variety in the Certhia Tribe; with wild Trees and Flowering Plants in the Concan. Figure has been cut out and pasted onto sheet, background details in pencil drawn in. Hand-coloured cut-and-paste bird and branch (etching) and leaves (lithograph?).
Note on names: The genus Certhia was introduced by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. Linneaus based his account of the Indian Certhia (Certhia pusilla) (https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/727023) on George Edwards' description in his History of Uncommon Birds of the "Little Brown and White Creeper" p. 26 - (https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/50240625). Edward's images may have been an influence on Forbes. Certhia pusilla is not now recognised as a species name. The colouring of this birds does not suggest any of the current Certhia species - possibly because of the delay between the original sketch and the colouring of the lithograph or the influence of Edward's images (where the bird appears reddish in the image). The range of most Certhia species also excludes western India. Misidentified?
