        History

        John Fraser Torrance was born on October 29, 1852, in Montreal, Quebec.

        He was a mining engineer. He graduated from McGill University (B.A., 1872; B.Sc. in Mining and Assaying, 1873). He was a member of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers and the American Institute of Mining Engineers. In 1889, Torrance became a corporate member and one of the directors of the Dominion Safety Boiler Company Ltd. He published several papers, e.g., "Notes on Gold and Silver Mining in the Province of Quebec" (1887?) and "Plumbago and Some of Its Uses" (1892?).

        In 1888, he married Elizabeth May Jack (1860-1940). He died on April 6, 1908, in Montreal, Quebec.
