Small, Henry Beaumont, 1854-1949

Dr. Henry Beaumont Small was born on April 17, 1854, in Toronto, Ontario, son of Henry Beaumont Small (1831-1919), a Canadian civil servant and an early naturalist.

He was a physician. In 1880, he graduated from McGill University and became one of the pioneer doctors in Ottawa. He was a schoolmate of P. D. Ross at McGill, publisher of the Ottawa Journal, and his personal doctor. He was a member of the first Board of Health when there were only 17 doctors in Ottawa. He was one of the first physicians in Ottawa to use ether, and a car to make house calls.

He contributed articles to the Reference Handbook of Medical Sciences, Twentieth Century Practice of Medicine, and other journals. He owned a large collection of scrapbooks documenting his school days, articles from Canadian, British, and American medical journals, and obituaries of many prominent people of Ottawa.

In 1886, he married Mary Elizabeth 'Minnie' Macpherson (1860–1919). He died on February 18, 1949, in Ottawa, Ontario.

He was an Emeritus member of the McGill Graduates Society in 1846, and made an honorary life member in 1947. In 1930 he was presented with the Medico-Chirurgical Society’s gold cane; he was an honorary life member. He was treasurer of the Canadian Medical Association for 25 years.
