Jean (Johann) Schoetter was born on March 31, 1823, in Esch-Sauer, Wiltz, Luxembourg.

He was a historian, teacher, genealogist, numismatist, pastor, and author. He wrote several books on the history of Luxembourg.

In 1854, he married Maria Catharina Müller (1826-1868). He died on June 14, 1881, in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg.
