History
The Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation is a private Canadian foundation providing grants to support the community sector. It was established by Saidye Bronfman and her husband Samuel in 1952. This grant-making organization primarily supports education, the arts, heritage preservation and Jewish community initiatives.
Over the years, the Foundation also funded several Canadian urban development projects through its Urban Issues Program, including transportation planning in Ottawa, street theatre in Montreal, and community development certificate programs in Halifax. One of the most innovative of the projects was Dummies Theatre, which staged free theatrical performances in vacant urban storefronts to draw attention to the historical significance and social potential of these spaces.
The Foundation supports many initiatives in various communities, including the Canadian Arctic Resources Committee, which focuses on issues affecting Aboriginal people living in the North and Arctic ecosystems and The Voice, a national network that gives a voice to Elders.
