History

The Provincial Association of Protestant Teachers of Quebec was formed in 1864 as a federation of local teachers' associations. It is Canada's oldest teaching association.
It brought together not only members of the teaching profession but also other persons interested in the progress of education. The first president was Dr. Jasper Nicholls, principal of Bishop's Collège. Sir John William Dawson, professor and principal of McGill University, was also elected to the presidency on three separate occasions. Since many of the members were connected with the Normal School as teachers or graduates, the discussions about the program and methods were held periodically, and occasionally, these led to demands for reform.
