History

George Ann Panton was born on April 24, 1842, in Edinburgh, Scotland.

He was a Scottish merchant, actuary, and amateur botanist and geologist. His father, William Panton (1806–1871), was a partner in Panton & Young, hatters and clothiers. Panton was a hop merchant. In 1863, he became a member of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh and later its president. In the 1870s, he served as Director of the English and Scottish Life Assurance Association and Secretary of the Edinburgh Geological Society. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1877.

In 1882, he married Eleanor Gertrude Lowe (1857–1934). He died on January 28, 1903, in Birmingham, England.
