Established on October 1, 1954, by McGill University, the laboratory was created to support scientific research on the physical and environmental conditions of the subarctic region. Initially, research activities focused on meteorology and climatology, but the laboratory's mandate expanded over time to include geography, hydrology, seismology, ecology, geomorphology, and studies relating to snow, soils, and permafrost.

Administrative history

The McGill Sub-Arctic Research Station (MSARS) is a research facility located in Schefferville, Québec, operating from 1971 to the present. The station was previously known as the McGill Sub-Arctic Research Laboratory (MSARL) from 1953 to 1971.

In 1971, following a relocation of its facilities, the laboratory was renamed the McGill Sub-Arctic Research Station. The change in designation reflected a transition from a year-round residential laboratory to a seasonal field research station. The station is administered by McGill University's Department of Geography within the Faculty of Science and continues to support research in northern and subarctic environments.

Custodial history

This fonds was originally created by the McGill Sub-Arctic Research Station. It was stored at Burnside Hall before being transferred to the McGill University Archives by Timothy R. Moore, acting director of the research lab (1980-1990). Original donation comprised approximately 42 boxes, the fonds was received on September 16,1982 by MUA staff member Brian M. Owens.

This fonds documents the administration, research activities, and development of the McGill Sub-Arctic Research Laboratory and its successor, the McGill Sub-Arctic Research Station.
