History

In 1850, the Montreal and Lachine Railroad (a nine-mile track around the Lachine Rapids which opened in 1847) merged with the Lake St. Louis and Province Railroad (a track from a point on the St. Lawrence opposite Lachine to the international border, where it was to connect with an American project) under the name Montreal and New York Railroad directed by John Torrance (1786-1870). On September 20, 1852, the rail link between Montreal and the United States was inaugurated (Montreal to Plattsburgh). In 1857, the company amalgamated with the Champlain and Saint Lawrence Railroad under the name Montreal and Champlain Railroad. It continued to operate until 1872 when it was absorbed by the Grand Trunk Railway.
