History

Hugh Edmonstone-Montgomerie, Esq., was born about 1822 in Trinidad, West Indies, son of John Montgomerie (1780-1830), who owned an estate in Trinidad.

He was a lawyer, shipowner, and ship insurance broker. In the 1840s, he lived in Montreal, Quebec, where he served as a Provincial Grand Master and was acknowledged as Special Grand Representative from the Grand Lodge of British North America during the Grand Lodge's annual session in the City of Baltimore in 1849. He later moved to England and became a broker for ship insurance. In 1854, he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. In 1864, he became part owner of a three-masted cargo ship named "Duke of Rothesay". He served as a chairman of the Land Company in London from 1865 to 1869.

In 1855, he married Ellen Appleyard Turner (1830–1913). He died on June 6, 1891, in Lambeth, Surrey, England.
