Johannes-Antoine Lestage was a distinguished Belgian entomologist and hydrobiologist whose research focused on freshwater insects. He made important contributions to the taxonomy and biology of several aquatic insect groups, particularly Ephemeroptera (mayflies), Plecoptera (stoneflies), and Trichoptera (caddisflies). In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the prestigious Prix Passet by the Société entomologique de France in 1919. The annual award honoured outstanding research on insect biology and developmental stages, and Lestage earned the distinction largely through his pioneering investigations of aquatic insect larvae, including his contemporary studies of Sialis lutaria. He also served as Director of the Aquarium and Museum of Pisciculture in Brussels, a role that complemented his scientific expertise in freshwater ecosystems and aquatic entomology, allowing him to oversee one of Belgium’s leading public institutions dedicated to aquatic life and fisheries.
